Extreme Art

I've come across some fairly interesting forms of artistic expression, but this one is definitely the most extreme that I can remember.

According to this article in the Yale Daily News ...

Art major Aliza Shvarts 08 wants to make a statement.

Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself as often as possible while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages.

Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.

Stroll Across The Universe

Clever Hand Painting

They're all very clever, but I like this one the most. I think it's something to do with the overhead angle.

Arterial Art

Artist Billy Chasen created this somewhat icky artwork that consists of a beating heart inside a clear glass cube.

As the heart pumps, it sprays blood all over the inside of the box ... yummo!

Note that the piece is quite apropos in this setting, being a Gala for the American Heart Association.

Impressive Ballet

Yummo

Cosmetics company Ella Bache has an installation in the grounds of the Museum of Contemporary Art, near Circular Quay here in Sydney.

It's a naked female human form whose skin consists of thousands of peaches.

So, if you're strolling through the city late at night and feeling a bit peckish, you know where to go :-).

I've never heard of Improv Everywhere before, but I'll definitely be following them from now on!

In this "performance", 207 of them entered Grand Central Terminal in New York and, on cue, simultaneously froze for a number of minutes and then continued, again simultaneously.


We've all seen one person do this, covered in gold paint, to look like a statue, and it's pretty mundane.

However, when over two hundred people do it, spread out across a large space, it's pretty amazing. Apart from looking incredibly effective, it causes others sharing the space to ask "What the hell is going on?".

I particularly enjoyed the confused security guard, calling for assistance, then saying "Never mind", a couple of seconds later, when the mob re-animated :-).

Update: Here's another prank, spread across ten subways around the world, where hundreds of people took their pants off. The video's not quite as impressive, but one can imagine the effect on other commuters :-).

Jane Abma

Jane Abma is an Australian artist.

While I found only a couple of her pieces interesting, the Flash-based navigation in her portfolio website, where you drag the corners of the pages to turn them, is quite cute.

Maybe this is a standard effect that Flash provides, but it's still impressive.

Jennifer Maestre

Jennifer Maestre creates amazing sculptures from interesting materials, like pencils, beads and nails.

This one is called "Heat Wave".

Toothpick Sculpture

Steven J Backman creates sculptures from toothpicks.

Some are tiny, being formed from a single toothpick. Others, like those he's pictured with here are made from large numbers of them, held together with glue.

Fine Art

I finally made it to my post office box yesterday, on my way to Newtown for dinner and beers with Socs.

I was pleased to discover that the drawing Aurin made of me a week ago was patiently waiting for me inside. Here it is, in all its glory.

Those who know me will realise that Aurin has perhaps taken a tiny artistic licence regarding the dimensions :-). That's just yet another reason for me to give it pride of place on my fridge.
